  • ABSTRACT

This study analyzed the ages and growth of 598 Trichiurus japonicus collected from the waters off Jeju Island, Korea, to determine their resource ecological characteristics. The sex ratio was 2.6:1 (432 females; 166 males), indicating a significantly higher proportion of females. The anal length (AL) spanned 18.0-53.0 cm for females and 17.8- 39.5 cm for males. Analysis of the ring formation period revealed that the proportion of the opaque zone peaked in September (84.2%), suggesting that one growth ring formed per year. The estimated age spanned 0-8 y for females and 0-6 y for males, with most of the population comprising individuals aged 2-3 y. The von Bertalanffy growth equations were estimated to be Lt=85.888(1-e-0.070(ti+2.994)) for females and Lt=41.968(1-e-0.240(ti+1.757))for males. The theoretical maximum length of females was approximately 44 cm longer than that of males. Given the significant differences in growth parameters between the sexes (χ2=27.28, df=3, P<0.001), it was concluded that sex-specific growth models are essential for precise stock assessment and management of T. japonicus in the waters off Jeju Island.
