Effects of Wheat Flour Content in Diets on the Growth and Body Compositionof Juvenile Sea Cucumber Apostichopus japonicus

  • ABSTRACT

    An 18 week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the impact of dietary wheat flour content (0, 7, 14, 21 and 28%) on the growth performance and body composition of juvenile sea cucumbers. Sea cucumbers Apostichopus japonicus (initial weight of 1.3 g) were randomly distributed into 15 tanks. Individual dietary treatments were conducted in triplicate (stocking density of 40 individuals per tank) and maintained under an average water temperature of 17.4°C. After feeding trials over 18 weeks, the survival rates ranged from 98 to 100% across all experimental groups. Although intermediate growth measurements in weeks 9 and 13 indicated no significant variation across treatments, the final weights in week 18 were significantly influenced by the dietary wheat flour content (P<0.05). Notably, the final weights of juvenile sea cucumbers that were fed the 21% wheat flour diet were significantly greater than those of the 28% inclusion group (P<0.05), although they did not differ significantly from those of 0, 7, and 14% treatment groups. Significant variation was observed in whole-body crude protein content among treatments (P<0.05). Based on these results, we conclude that up to 21% wheat flour can be used in juvenile sea cucumber diets without compromising survival and growth.
