Fishing Characteristics of the Korean Tuna Purse Seine Fishery in theIndian Ocean Considering the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)

This study analyzed the fishing characteristics of the Korean tuna purse seine fishery in the Indian Ocean considering the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). Logbook data collected from 2012 to 2025 and the Dipole Mode Index (DMI), an indicator of the IOD, were used for the analysis. School types were classified as fish aggregating device (FAD) and free-swimming school (FSC) sets. To account for delayed environmental effects, lagged DMI variables from 0 to 6 months were compared. The one-month lagged variable was identified as the most suitable based on model performance. A generalized additive model with a Tweedie distribution and log link function was used to assess the impacts of temporal, spatio-seasonal, environmental, and school-type variables. The results indicated that fishing patterns and environmental responses differed according to school type, and the influence of the IOD was stronger in the FAD than in the FSC sets. In particular, the FAD sets showed a decreasing catch per unit effort pattern under positive DMI conditions. These findings provide useful information for understanding the relationship between climate variability and fishing behavior, thereby contributing to climate-responsive fishery management.
