Comparative Analysis of Fishing Variation Characteristics in WatersAround the Korean Peninsula Based on FAO Area 61 and National FisheriesStatistics

The long-term fishery catch trends around the Korean Peninsula were analyzed by comparing national and FAO catch statistics within FAO Fishing Area 61. Official catch statistics for Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, and Russia were compared for 2007-2024 using an FAO-based five-country total-catch comparison (Track A); a national statisticsbased analysis of total catch, shared species, and catch composition diversity (Track B); and an FAO-versus-national statistics comparison (Track C). Source consistency, trends, and species composition patterns were evaluated. The total catches by Korea, Japan, and Taiwan significantly decreased over the period, but they significantly increased for Russia. China had the largest mean catch. Shared-species catches showed strong national asymmetry: China dominated hairtail and small yellow croaker, and Russia dominated walleye pollock, whereas common squid declined synchronously in the Korean and Japanese statistics. Catch-composition diversity trends diverged according to data source. For example, the China national statistical trend was non-significant, whereas the FAO-based trend significantly declined. These discrepancies reflect differences in aggregation scope and taxonomic resolution, and the FAO's gap-filling of unreported data. These findings support source-specific validation and standardized reporting for shared fishery management.
