Evaluation of the Applicability of Weather Radar-Based SpatiotemporalRainfall Data for Freshwater Inflow and Pollutant Load Estimation inJinhae Bay

inflow and pollutant load estimation in coastal areas. Rain-gauge observations from three stations near Jinhae Bay were compared with weather radar rainfall data for the 2020 wet season. Radar rainfall intensity was estimated using the Marshall and Palmer Z-R relationship, and a mean field bias (MFB) correction was applied to reduce systematic underestimation resulting from indirect estimation and atmospheric attenuation. The radar rainfall data showed correlation coefficients greater than 0.8 at all stations, indicating that temporal variability of rainfall was reproduced. However, the bias was approximately -0.55, indicating underestimation relative to rain-gauge observations. After MFB correction, the bias approached 0, and the relative errors decreased from approximately 54% to 13%, while the correlation coefficients remained high. These results indicate that bias-corrected weather radar rainfall data can complement point-based rain-gauge observations by providing spatially distributed rainfall information. However, verification in this study was limited to improvements in radar rainfall estimates at rain-gauge locations and adjacent radar grids. Therefore, further verification using independent hydrological or offshore rainfall observations is required before any resulting improvements in the estimation of freshwater inflow and pollutant loads can be quantified.
