  • ABSTRACT

The study aimed to select superior strains with improved growth characteristics from Pyropia tenera wild strains by using gamma irradiation (100 and 500 Gy) and analyze their indoor and field growth performances. Superior strains (PT100G and PT500G) that showed markedly enhanced growth when compared with the wild type were selected from the gamma-irradiated groups. According to indoor growth experiments, all strains showed the highest blade length at 10°C. PT100G and PT500G exhibited average blade lengths of 84.10±5.10 mm and 90.83±3.93 mm, respectively, which were approximately 1.6-1.7 times greater than that of the wild type (51.93±2.66 mm). Moreover, PT500G showed significantly higher growth than the wild type at 15°C and 20°C, suggesting improved temperature tolerance induced by gamma-ray irradiation. Field cultivation experiments also demonstrated significantly higher growth in both superior strains than in the wild type. PT100G showed an average blade length of 56.52±3.49 mm, which was approximately 1.7 times greater than that of the wild type. These results indicate that gamma irradiation can be effectively used to improve the growth traits of P. tenera wild strains, and the selected mutant strains may serve as valuable breeding materials for future cultivar development.
