Survival, Physiological, and Histological Responses of Juvenile ThreelineGrunt (Parapristipoma trilineatum) under Different Salinity Conditions

The objective of this study was to characterize the salinity tolerance of juvenile threeline grunt (Parapristipoma trilineatum) and analyze its physiological and histological responses under different salinity conditions to assess its viability as a prospective aquaculture species. Juvenile threeline grunt individuals (51.1±1.6 g) were exposed to salinities of 31.7 (control), 25, 20, 15, 10, and 5 psu for 10 days. Cumulative survival remained high (96-98%) between 31.7 and 10 psu; conversely, all fish died within 72 h at 5 psu. Plasma Na+ and Cl- concentrations, as well as osmolality, decreased with decreasing salinity. However, plasma ALT, AST, cortisol, and glucose concentrations were not significantly different among the experimental groups. Neither Na+/K+-ATPase concentration in the gill and kidney nor hepatic antioxidant responses (SOD, CAT, and MDA) were significantly affected by salinity. Histological structures of the gill, kidney, and liver were also not markedly affected. These results show that juvenile threeline grunt can tolerate salinities as low as 10 psu, indicating that the species may inhabit environments with a wide range of salinities. The defined salinity tolerance range provides valuable insights for future assessments of this species’ aquaculture potential.
