Effects of Multi-Strain Probiotics on Growth, Immunity and Disease Resistance in Olive Flounder Paralichthys olivaceus

This study evaluated the effects of dietary multi-strain probiotics on growth performance, plasma biochemical and immune parameters, immune-related gene expression, and disease resistance in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), assessed by cumulative mortality after an Edwardsiella tarda challenge. Fish were fed diets containing Bacillus subtilis (B), Enterococcus faecium (E), and Pediococcus pentosaceus (P) for 5 weeks. Compared with the control group, fish fed the B+E, E+P, and B+E+P diets had significantly higher final body weight, weight gain, and specific growth rate and lower feed conversion ratios (P<0.05). Plasma lysozyme activity was significantly higher in the B+E+P group (P<0.05), whereas plasma biochemistry, phagocytic activity, anti-protease activity, and immune-related gene expression did not differ among treatments. After the E. tarda challenge, probiotic-fed groups showed lower cumulative mortality than the control group, although the differences were not significant. Thus, dietary multi-strain probiotics improved growth performance, feed utilization, and plasma lysozyme activity in olive flounder; however, their effects and underlying mechanisms require further investigation.
